Glutened and Healthy

This is where we get down to the nitty-gritty of the celiac disease condition. The celiac alert runs like this: when you experience the onset of a headache and feel itchy or uneasy, then you know that you have eaten something you should not have had.

Accidentally ingesting gluten is a not a great feeling. I have said this before but it bears repetition: it happens to all of us at some point, no matter how new or habituated we are to the gluten-free diet. First of all, I again have this to say: Please do not blame yourself; it’s not worth it and beating yourself up does not help in any way. I have mentioned incidents where this has happened to me, and how I dealt with the crises that cropped up. There is absolutely no point thinking about how you could have avoided the crisis. Everything that happens is not under our control and we all know that these things will happen.

So, what do you do when you know you have been glutened or when you have accidentally ingested some gluten? (Disclaimer: Glutened is not a word you will find in any dictionary but both sufferers and the medical faculty are familiar with it). One vital point to remember is that drinking water and staying hydrated helps even if you are not experiencing any sort of stomach upset. There is nothing like water to help flush out toxins and if you are suffering from a headache, water helps in slowly diminishing its effect. Sipping water has worked wonders for me; it definitely has a healing effect and I feel it soothes the gut. Of course, make sure you drink safe and clean water.

Most of the ways to counter being glutened are similar to many natural home remedies which people follow when experiencing diarrhoea. One of the most common remedies is drinking carom seed or ajwain water. Put a teaspoon of the seeds into water and boil the water. Once the water is boiled and reduced to half its quantity, strain and drink it.

In virtually every Indian household, another favourite remedy is to either eat fenugreek (methi) or drink methi-seed water. This holds good for a gluten attack, too. Mix half a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds with water and drink up or you can soak the seeds for a couple of hours in water and then drink the water.

Lime water is another remedy which helps. Lime water with salt and sugar or just
